Hemis Gompa being the largest monastery in Ladakh is located at a distance of 45 kilometres from Leh. Around 100 Gompas were excavated from this place. These Gompas are said to be the religious residences of Buddhist monks who stay here by leading the Buddhist way of life, meditating and praying. As these gompas are situated in the remote places, trekking is the best way of exploring these places.
Another Buddhist Destination for touring is Namgyal Tsemo Gompa, which was built in the year 1430. It is the three-storeyed statue of Lord Buddha. The Sankar Gompa is another important monastery for the tourists from all over the world.
Shanti Stupa Ladakh
The Shanti Stupa was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in the year 1995. The clay images of Lord Buddha and Manuscripts were excavated by the archaeologists. The predominant feature of Buddhism at Ladakh were the teachings of Mahayana and Hinayana Buddhist sects which throws a light on the monasteries, that were built in this fascinating place.The Buddhist tour to ladakh promotes rich Buddhist cultural heritage. The root of Buddhism at Ladakh has been excavated during 10th and 11th centuries. Buddhist monk Tsong Khapa was the first person to promote the Gelupka order of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist leader. It is pertinent to note that the royal family of Ladakh had supported the Monks to settle down in Ladakh.
This gradually turned Buddhism as the dominant religion in Ladakh. The spiritual leader Dalai Lama had opened several meditation centres all throughout Ladakh to make an attraction for the spiritual tourists.
