Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery - LadakhLocated in Ladakh, shortly about 40 kilometer away from South-east of Leh in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. This beautiful monastery was founded by King Senge Nampar Gyalva in the year 1672 A.D. It was specifically established by the king to enhance the religious education of Mahayoga Tantra School.


The monastery is carved in Tibetan Style, which throws a light of the Buddhist culture and the Buddhist way of lifestyle. It is surrounded by several shrines built around the courtyard of the monastery. The statue of Lord Buddha, made in copper placed at main attraction for the tourist. The annual celebration celebrated in the month of June by performing dance in century old costumes and colorful masks. This celebration depicts the evading evil by way of sacrificial gestures.
