Tabo Monastery

Tabo Monastery - Himachal PradeshTabo monastery is located on the Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh. The monastery is one of the largest monasteries in India, spreading almost 6300 sq meter surrounded by a boundary wall. The monastery was established by a scholar named Richen Zangpo around 996 A.D. The monastery was built with the purpose of opening a Buddhist Learning center of advanced studies.


Tabo is a small place which has housed around 300 monks from all around the country. The monastery portrays the life of Lord Buddha. The wall paintings and murals from the ancient times are the major attractions of the place. The predominant attraction of the monastery is the “Chaitya Hall” which depicts the magnificent structure of Buddhist sculpture.


This monastery has flourished due to the learning center of advanced studies and therefore, has influenced many scholars to come and pursue higher education from all around the globe.
