Tawang Buddhist Monastery

Tawang Buddhist Monastery - Arunachal PradeshSituated at the valley of Tawang Chuu, this monastery known to people as one of the oldest monasteries of India. It is located 3300 meters above the sea level in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The monastery follows the Gelugpa sect and home for many Buddhist monks who have started its own religious center.


The Buddhist followers of Mahayana school of Buddhism, the monks have their own unique way of lifestyle. These monks mostly belong to Sherdukpen and Monpa tribes and the monastery has housed over 500 monks. The main attraction is its three storied structured building and the library. It has preserved the old relics and handwritten manuscripts from the old times.


The monastery was established by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso with the help of 5th Dalai Lama in the year 1680. The lifestyle of the tribals and the Holy Buddhist monks are a spiritual experience for the tourists from abroad.


The 14th Dalai Lama has recently made his home at Tawang due to Chinese invasion in Tibet.
