The Kye (Ki) Monastery

Kye (Ki) Monastery - Himachal PradeshKye located on the beautiful Spiti valley with snow Cladded Mountain, just 14 kilometer north of Kaza in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is the oldest and the finest monastery built in the name of Lord Buddha. It is said to have been established by a Buddha’s Disciple named Drompton. As the monastery was a part of Gelupa sect, it has been made a religious Buddhist center in the 14th century. Gradually it gained its popularity due to the Chinese invasion which had influenced the development of this religious center.


In the mean time when the monastery started to flourish with the development of the religious center, it was attacked by the Mongols. Although it survived, the monastery damaged to great extent due to fire breakout. Soon, it was the victim of devastating earthquake in the year 1975.


The pre-dominant feature of the monastery is the cave style Temples which was built around the monastery. The monastery has preserved several ancient murals, paintings, handwritten scripts and lost relics from the time of existence of Lord Buddha. Now, the monastery has been made into a Lama center which has eventually gained eminent popularity among the Buddhist Scholars and devotees.


This monastery is also popular because for its Buddhist ceremony ‘Kalchakra’ referred as “Wheel of Time”. The Buddhist religious center specializes in certain specific subjects like sadhana, Buddha hood, Cosmology and Physiology. This has started attracting many scholars and archaeologists from all around the world.


Due to its unique monastic architecture, the monastery holds its true beauty till today. Dharamsala the beautiful Spiti valley surrounded by Mountain landscapes which is absolutely breathtaking.
